Equipment preparation before a climbing activity

Preparation checklist for climbing, courses and via ferrata

Useful preparation starts by reading the activity page and confirming what equipment is included. This checklist gathers common items and advance questions, but cannot replace instructions for a specific outing. Before booking, share any health or mobility constraint that could affect pace, equipment or objective selection.

Planning resources

Shared essentials for every day

Bring sports clothing that allows movement, layers suited to the forecast, closed footwear appropriate for the approach, enough water and food for the stated duration, and sun protection. Avoid untested footwear or clothes that restrict movement. A compact backpack carries necessities without adding loose objects.

Check meeting place and time, duration, travel arrangements and included equipment. Describe recent experience and goals accurately. Share injuries and relevant health or mobility constraints in advance so activity and equipment can be assessed; do not wait until arrival to raise information that could alter selection.

The forecast used while selecting clothing can change. Review instructions and weather information again before leaving rather than assuming a generic list works in every season. If access, meeting time or plan has not been confirmed, ask: this page does not verify logistical changes in real time.

Reviewed:

Shared essentials for every day

  • Layered sports clothing and sun protection.
  • Closed footwear, water and food for the day.
  • Meeting point, time, travel and duration confirmed.
  • Experience, objective and relevant needs disclosed.
  • Included equipment checked on the specific activity page.

Guided climbing: objective and sustained effort

  • Describe known rock climbing, belaying, multi-pitch and exposure.
  • Confirm climbing shoes and personal equipment to bring.
  • Keep water, food and layers accessible during the route.
  • Leave physical and time margin for descent and return.

Courses: prerequisites and readiness to practise

  • Check prerequisites for the selected course.
  • Explain tasks you can repeat without assistance.
  • Do not practise new systems from a written summary alone.
  • Do not improvise how equipment will be carried or hung.
  • Do not add technical gear without checking compatibility first.
  • Reserve energy and attention for practice and checks.
  • Disclose concerns about exposure or fall practice.

Via ferrata: footwear, hands and exposure tolerance

  • Closed grippy footwear and harness-compatible clothing.
  • Sports gloves where recommended for the offer.
  • Via ferrata experience and response to height explained.
  • Grade, duration and approach reviewed.
  • Conditions and access remain subject to prior checks.

Guided climbing: objective and sustained effort

For a sport-climbing day, describe outdoor experience, approximate grade and belaying background without presenting one successful session as stable competence. If you own climbing shoes, ask whether to bring them; the specific activity page determines included technical equipment. Short nails and clothing that permits high steps improve comfort.

For multi-pitch climbing, ask about approach, total duration and descent rather than climbed length alone. Prepare easy-to-eat food, water and layers manageable on the wall. Explain experience with exposure and long days. The objective should leave enough margin to remain attentive through changeovers and the return.

Get reasonable rest before the date and avoid framing the objective as a test that must be completed at any cost. Pace, weather, access or group condition may require another option. Those factors need checks before confirmation and close to departure because this list does not certify current conditions.

Courses: prerequisites and readiness to practise

Beginner training requires no prior experience. For lead, multi-pitch or protection courses, read the published prerequisites and describe systems you perform consistently. Having watched a technique or completed a route with help is not the same as independent execution; an accurate account allows exercises and expectations to be adjusted.

Bring usual equipment only where the activity page suggests it and confirm beforehand what will be used. Arrive ready to alternate observation, practice, checks and rests. Lead training uses progression that can include fall management without imposing a fixed distance; discuss concerns before booking and during the day.

Match the learning goal to available time and starting point. Covering fewer topics with controlled practice may be more useful than rushing through a long list. If location, timing or programme depends on variable conditions, it needs reconfirmation before the date; the course title does not guarantee a fixed crag.

Via ferrata: footwear, hands and exposure tolerance

Wear closed shoes with good grip and clothing that does not interfere with a harness. Sports gloves are recommended on relevant activity pages and can improve hand comfort, but do not replace suitable technical progression. Confirm which helmet, harness and specific equipment the activity provides before packing personal gear.

Describe previous experience, response to height and capacity for sustained arm and leg effort. Check approach, duration and published difficulty. Any applicable regulation, access, available equipment information and weather must be checked before confirmation and close to departure; neither booking nor this list guarantees future conditions.

Explain vertigo, discomfort when raising the arms, recent injuries or limited mobility that could affect steps, bridges or the approach. This information supports selection; it cannot promise that the itinerary will be possible. Published grade gives guidance, while conditions, access and final suitability require advance confirmation.
